Comparative study after the storm event of 2021 (“Bernd“)

Analysis of the effects of the 2021 storm in Switzerland in a Central European comparison and the effectiveness of prevention and intervention

Comparative study after the storm event of 2021 (“Bernd“)

The study analyses the effects of the severe weather event of 2021 (low ‘Bernd’) in Switzerland and compares them with earlier events in Switzerland and the effects of ‘Bernd’ in Germany and Austria. In particular, it analyses how prevention, intervention (crisis management) and claims settlement have affected the level of damage.

The focus of alpS GmbH in this project was the hydro-climatological analysis of past damage events. For this purpose, raster data sets of precipitation in the three countries and discharge measurements were systematically analysed and interpreted. These analyses form the basis for further statistical analyses of damage data, performed at the University of Applied Science of the Grisons.
